In medicine, measuring is very important. Measuring and monitoring electronic equipment has become an integral part of medicine. Medical electronics are helping improve our medical care and find cures and treatments for almost all diseases nowadays. And measuring all various values is a crucial step in treating the disease – starting with thermometers and basic scales. Let´s take a look at some of the most important electronic measuring devices, used in medicine nowadays.
Thermometer is probably the first device that comes to mind relating to medicine. It is most often used to measure the temperature of the patient’s body. In general, there are two basic types of thermometers – digital and IR thermometers.
Digital thermometers have a probe and a digital display. They need to have a physical contact with the body, most usually being put under the armpit, while the IR thermometers are completely contactless (due to which they are often used in airports). IR thermometers consist of a lens that focuses the infrared energy onto a target body, detects the energy emitted by the body and displays the value in the temperature units.
Most of the scales used in medicine nowadays are digital. There are multiple types of scales used – classical floor scales, scales with bowls, baby and paediatric scales, waist level scales, eye level scales and others.
Floor scales are used for measuring the overall weight of the patient. Waist and eye level scales serve the same purpose, but also measure additional values, like the height etc. They have a digital display to show the values measured.
Heart rate monitor
Heart rate monitors are used to measure and monitor the patient´s heart rate. They record the values in real time. Often these devices are used by athletes to determine when the body is being pushed without the risk of injury. Therefore, heart rate monitors are perfect for cardio workouts, measuring how hard you work. They can help you prevent injuries is you want to exercise but are a beginner, so you don´t know your limits yet.
There are multiple types of heart rate monitors. Chest heard rate monitors are strapped to the chest and provide the most accurate results. Foetal heart rate monitors are used during pregnancy to monitor the heart rate of the foetus. And lastly, the wrist rate monitors are worn on the wrist and provide continuous heart rate. They are waterproof and have also additional features like time and date and stop-watch.
Blood pressure gauges, sometimes also called Sphygmomanometers or blood pressure monitors, are crucial in medicine field. They are used daily by general practitioners, dentists, in hospitals and clinics and are found on inflation devices, anaesthesia equipment, medical regulators, respiratory equipment, dental systems, and others. Used all over the world, pressure gauges are very important measuring equipment in medicine.
The device usually consists of a strap that is put around the arm and inflated. Then it measures the values and shows the results on the digital display. Before the digital devices, pressure gauges used to be manual – the doctor had to inflate the strap with a little balloon pressed with his hand.
The stethoscope is an audio medical device for listening to the internal sounds of the human body or an animal. It is frequently used to listen to the sounds of the lung and heart and detect any possible diseases. Also, it is used to listen to intestines and blood flow in veins and arteries. In combination with a sphygmomanometer, stethoscope can be used for measurements of blood pressure. Stethoscopes can also be used to check scientific vacuum chambers for leaks, and for various other small-scale acoustic monitoring tasks.
Inclinometers are used to measure the passive range of motion i.e. they allow the medical practitioner to compare the patient’s relaxed position to the ability to move. They are basically used to measure the range of motion of a joint and are good for measuring the range of motion in the field of physical and occupational therapy. Additionally, inclinometers are used for tracking the effectiveness of therapy in the course of recovery and measure the body’s position and stability in certain areas along with slope and tilt of joints.
Inclinometers are small devices that are placed close to the joint and the dial is set to 0 initially. Several range of motion tests are conducted, and the readings recorded. Sometimes two inclinometers can be used in conjugation to measure the range of motion of the spine and the stability angle simultaneously. Dual inclinometers are used for testing the upper and lower spine side by side where one device is placed on the cervical or upper thoracic region and the other is placed in the lumbar region.
A pedometer is used to count the number of steps that you walk. It works by detecting the movement of one´s hand or hips while walking. As any other device and measuring tool, pedometers have evolved thorough the history, too. Modern pedometers are digital computers with a software that not only counts the steps, but also measures the distance walked and have integrated GPS. Some pedometers also have other additional features, like counting the calories burned etc.
Blood gas analyser
Gaz analysers are used to calculate the pressure of the chemical elements like carbon monoxide, nitrogen, oxygen in blood. By analysing results, it is possible to understand if any disorder in blood, particularly after the patient feels sick.
Blood glucose monitor
Blood glucose monitor is used to calculate glucose level of diabetic patients. A little drop of patient´s blood is placed on the strip which has sensors to measure the amount of glucose in the blood. In just a few seconds, the device will calculate the values and the result will appear on the little display.
Hand dynamometers are instruments that are used to test the hand grip strength. They are also used for a comparative measurement in left and right hands. Any type of hand trauma or dysfunction can be assessed with the help of these devices. Also, the effectiveness of treatment can be judged during the period of recovery. Modern dynamometers come equipped with features like a digital display. Many types of dynamometers exist including Strain Gauge Dynamometer or Push-Pull Dynamometer, Hydraulic Gauge Dynamometer and Pneumatic Dynamometer. These devices can also be used to measure strength of arm, back or leg in order to evaluate the physical performance. Dynamometers measure the force applied to the lever or by pulling the cable.
Electronic cardiac monitor
The Electronic Cardiac Monitor is used to display the electrical and pressure waveforms of the cardiac system. By placing specific electrodes on certain parts of the body it is possible to measure the ECG of the cardiac system. The values will note any irregular activities within the cardiac system, and it can also detect heart issues. This type of monitor is used for various medical treatments and especially while surgeries.
