The MFT1741 multifunction tester has been designed for testing single and three phase low voltage domestic, commercial and industrial electrical installations, providing all the tests required to complete the necessary electrical certification. All with an EN61010 Cat IV safety rating.

Built to last and take the strains of everyday testing, the Megger MFT1741 is robust, featuring a large central back lit screen with test buttons situated either side for accessibility for both right and left handed users. Smooth single click rotary dials and large buttons make for easy operation even when wearing gloves. The unit is also IP54 rated, perfect for dusty environments and for the often unpredictable British weather!

The MFT1741 is a faster and more reliable version of the MFT17x1 series. Test times have lowered to 8 seconds (From 15) with a 4 second display. It is much faster testing on quiet circuits, it automatically detects circuit noise when present and has an auto-start when in contact with the circuit.

It has new ‘Confidence Meter’ technology so now, you have improved measurement repeatability with an Arc that shows a degree of confidence in the accuracy of results. Dynamic updating display shows noise presence and measurement progress.

Overlaying the new non-trip loop impedance measurement is the new “confidence meter”. As loop impedance values can be dramatically affected by circuit noise, the Confidence Meter displays the degree of confidence in the accuracy of the measured loop impedance via an expanding and contracting arc.

How does the confidence meter arc work?

Circuits with low / no noise
The display shows a full width analogue arc, consisting of 51 elements. At the start of the test all elements are displayed. The instrument will then check for any adverse electrical noise. If nothing is found the test sequence will terminate and display a final value. The arc closes to one centre element, indicating the maximum degree of confidence in the result.

Circuits with high noise / distortion
On detecting noise on the supply the Confidence Meter will continue testing and refining its measurement. This is shown by the noise symbol to the left of the display appearing and the arc closing more slowly, pausing or even opening up again in high noise situations. When the confidence meter has refined its measurement, the arc will finally close to one element and the test will stop. The final displayed result may differ from the original quite significantly.

Extreme noise may cause the loop test measurement to continue for over a minute. In this case the tester will stop automatically and the size of the arc will indicate how good the meter believes the displayed value is.

The 1741 also protects against accidental misuse, giving both visual and audible warnings if the unit detects voltages exist on the circuit. Testing will be inhibited to prevent serious damage. Also, save money on batteries as the MFT1741 includes rechargeable batteries and charger, with a charge time of less than 4 hours.

In particular, it boasts a new confidence meter which indicates the reliability of a reading and enhanced loop testing hardware which negates the effects of RCDs on loop impedance values.
As with other instruments in the MFT1701 range, the tester is ideal for use on residential, commercial and industrial low voltage installations for certifying systems in accordance with BS7671 and Part P of the building regulations. With loop impedance readings after just four seconds, the MFT1741 has the fastest and most accurate no-trip loop testing procedure on the market.

Patented Confidence Meter
The advanced three-wire no-trip loop impedance test on the Megger MFT1741 is extremely useful for when RCDs or RCBOs prevent the use of high current two-wire tests as regular no-trip tests are susceptible to interference from noise and harmonics. The tester automatically detects and compensates for such interference after performing the initial loop test, thus enabling stable, repeatable loop tests on noisy circuits. This compensation is tracked by the contraction of the Confidence Meter arc displayed above the reading as the figure is adjusted. If the arc fails to totally contract, this suggests that the final reading is likely to be unreliable whilst a complete contraction indicates high reliability. The Megger MFT1741’s Confidence Meter therefore lessens the need for repeat readings of earth loop impedance by confirming when a reading is very reliable. If the arc shows a low reliability level, the user can take steps to improve the reading such as bypassing RCDs or taking repeat readings.

Enhanced Loop Test
The second main innovative feature of the Megger MFT1741 is the advanced loop testing hardware that negates the effects of RCD impedance uplift. Testing through RCDs can often produce overly high loop impedance readings because of resistance in the coil of some RCDs and normal MFTs cannot distinguish between the two. The three-wire test function on the MFT1741 uses a variety of test currents and measurement methods to prevent skewed readings due to RCDs. It is equally adept testing through 10mA devices as it is through 30mA devices and can even perform no-trip tests through Type B RCDs, resulting in improved versatility and accuracy.

Comprehensive Testing Capabilities
Aside from its patent-pending confidence meter and enhanced loop impedance test, the Megger MFT1741 also performs a full range of tests for accurately verifying new or repaired electrical installations. These functions include continuity testing at 15mA and 200mA; insulation resistance testing at 100V, 250V, 500V and 1000V; RCD testing (ramp, manual and auto); true RMS voltage measurement; and two/three pole earth testing. It is even capable of ART and stake-less testing although additional accessories are required. B-type and three-phase RCS can be tested with this instrument.

Readings for all tests are shown on the Megger MFT1741’s backlit LCD display in both digital and analogue format and it is very easy to select the appropriate function thanks to the two clearly-labelled dials. The MFT benefits from intuitive operation and can store results to its internal memory which can then be downloaded using supplied Megger Download Manager which is provided as standard with the instrument. Data transfer is carried out using the tester’s wireless Bluetooth connectivity. Results can be further managed by optional Megger Powersuite Lite software.
